Searching the catalogue

This guide details how to search the interim catalogue for the collection items you would like to view

Understanding your search results

When you’ve carried out your search, brief details of items matching your criteria are displayed in a list. Your initial simple search may still produce hundreds of results. You can refine your results by using the options on the left of the screen.

Using the search filters

The filters available are dependent on the items shown in your results list, but you’ll probably have the choice of refining by resource type, author/creator, date, and subject.

You can include or exclude terms as you choose by checking the box next to each option. Applying each refinement will reduce the number of items in your results list:

  • Active filters, displayed at the top of the left-hand column, show you the refinements you have applied to your results lists. You can remove one or all at any time by clicking X next to each term.
  • Resource types shows you the different types of material available in your results list. Most are self-explanatory. Journals means items which are published periodically – weekly, fortnightly, monthly, annually – but which are not newspapers.
  • Creation date allows you to refine your results list by date range. Simply over-type any existing dates with the ones you want.
  • You can re-sort your results list using Sort by on the left, above the refinement options. The default sort is Relevance, but you can also choose Date newest, Date oldest, Author, or Title.

Seeing more details

Once you’re happy with your results list, you can look at each item in more detail.

Click the title of an item to open the full display. This shows you more details about a single item, including information on how to see it.

You don’t need to return to the brief display to see the full details of any other item in your results list; once you’ve opened a full display, you can use the up and down arrows on the left to move from one record to the next.

Click the X on the left to return to your results list.
