The British Newspaper Archive

The British Newspaper Archive (BNA) is the main resource for viewing digitised UK local and regional newspapers.

Over 80 million pages of fully searchable content are already available covering over 2,000 newspaper titles from every region of the United Kingdom. The site grows daily as new images are added. A list of newspaper titles included is available to view on the site. The coverage includes titles from most UK cities and all regions of the UK and Ireland.

Full text searching is available throughout the archive, and it is searchable by date, title and keywords. Users can refine their search by geographic region and to focus on article type, such as:

  • family notices such as births, marriages and death notices, reports of weddings and funerals etc.

  • obituaries

  • news articles

  • illustrations

  • adverts

  • letters.

We normally provide free access to this resource onsite, though at the moment it will have to be viewed elsewhere. Free access is available at the London Archives, and the National Archives in Kew, but many local libraries and history centres also subscribe to the resource, so it is worth checking your local area.

Otherwise, you can subscribe as an individual to use the resource on your own computer.
