Social Sciences

Our collection covers social sciences disciplines including, but not restricted to anthropology, criminology, economics, education, management and business studies, media studies, politics, psychology, research methods and social policy.

What's available?

The electoral registers are not shelved in the Reading Room and you will need to request to consult them. Please note:

  • print copies of registers pre-2001 are stored in Boston Spa, Yorkshire and should be ordered at least 48 hours in advance

  • registers from 2002 onwards are stored in St Pancras, London and should be delivered within 70 minutes after you have placed an order. Requests for same-day delivery close at 16.00.

  • microfilm sets of historic registers for England 1832-1938 (the collection is incomplete) are also kept in St Pancras

Consulting an electoral register

To request an electoral register, you need to request it using our online form.

Please note:

  • only one year can be requested per form

  • you can place up to 6 requests per day

You will need to know:

  • the parliamentary constituency

  • the shelfmark of the register.

The electoral registers are not included in our interim catalogue. Instead, you will need to consult the list Parliamentary Constituencies and their Registers since 1832 (see below). There are two print copies of this list in the Social Sciences Reading Room.

This index lists constituencies alphabetically, gives our register holdings and shelfmark for each. It is continuously updated to reflect constituency boundary revisions.

Registers can only be delivered to the Social Sciences reading room; they cannot be consulted elsewhere.

Our Reference team in the Social Sciences Reading Room can help you with your request.

Copying extracts from electoral registers

An electoral register can't be photographed or photocopied until 10 years after its publication. This restriction complies with Representation of the People and Data Protection legislation.

The law also prohibits us from disclosing any information from these full versions over the phone or in writing until 10 years after their publication.
